IELTS Writing Task 2 practice 1

Q: Going overseas for university study is an exciting prospect for many people. But while it may offer some advantages, it is probably better to stay at home because of the difficulties a student inevitably encounters living and studying in a different culture. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement and give you opiion.

Education is an important aspect in all people. It is a fact that, second to physiological needs, knowledge is indeed what builds a person's worth. It is not a questionable fact that some people do go through necessary sacrifices to achieve a higher level of learning.

Hence some people, provided that that they have the necessary minimum resources, do push through with studying abroad despite of the sacrifices as well as trials that they have to face. As a matter of fact, most of my fellow examinees are applying for a student visas to study abroad no matter how hard it may seem to venture into unknown territory. This just simply shows that no matter what happens, as long as there is a goal ahead to achieve, there should always be a way.

However, I think that to achieve success does not necessarily mean a better education abroad. Education does not necessarily define a person's character. I have read in an article an exchange student who got a scholarship in a prestigious university in U.S. got derailed in his path towards a proper education. Having away from his family, he got into vices and and other bad elements that destroyed his hope for a bright future. It is unfortunate that his parent's sacrifices are forfeited because of his being exposed on a different culture.

Therefore I believe that study in abroad doesn't necessarily spell success in the long run. Building a person's character should stay side by side with education in order for them to be able to attain their goals in life and chances are, a family's guidance is needed.
